Large Living Room Rugs

Wooden or tiled floors look great, there is no denying it. Maybe it’s the sharpness and the definite edges where the floor meets the walls or the minimalistic atmosphere they create. Flooring in your living room is something that is often overthought. While most would opt for hard floors in the kitchen or bathrooms and floor that is softer underfoot in bedrooms, the living room is almost in between the two.

Although you may still entertain people in the living room, it’s not as frequented as the kitchen or dining room with guests so do you go all-out comfort and have a soft shaggy carpet underfoot.

If you’re into your hard-wood living room floors but you’re missing the comfort of a carpet, particularly in the colder months have you thought about a large living room rug?

Depending on the size of your living room it can sometimes almost look as though you have a carpet down anyway. You can easily remove the rug if you are entertaining a few friends or you have a particularly boisterous nephew.

Most large rugs are easily cleaned and can be flipped and rotated if that red wine just won’t come out.

Large Rugs for Large Living Rooms

If you have a large living room and you have more than a couple of pieces of furniture then you may choose to opt for an extra large rug that is larger than the area taken up by your furniture. The rug will fit underneath all of your sofas and chairs and unify the space. This works particularly well for areas and rooms that are large enough to effectively be split into two spaces, a rug creates a border and adds depth to your living room.

Large Rugs for Mid Size Living Rooms

When you have a mid-sized living room where one of your sofas backs against a wall then a large rug that fits under the front two legs of the sofas will make the living room appear slightly larger. With your floor exposed between the wall and the rug the living room will have a balance of style and comfort. It will make the space feel relaxing and give the extra bit of warmth under your feet in the colder months.

Large Rugs for Small Living Rooms

Small living rooms can also be adjusted to house a large living room rug. Try longer rugs that will fit either right underneath the sofa or under the front legs, this will make the room flow and elongate the length of your space. If your living room is small and square shaped opt for a square rug that will sit under the coffee table with a gap from the wall. A large rug in small living room will not only create the extra touch of colour but also warm the space.

What colour rug fits my living room?

Rugs come in all shapes, sizes and materials. The colour you choose depends completely on preference and what theme and overall design you are trying to achieve in your home. We believe that rugs are there to be celebrated and shouldn’t just be a neutral underlay to keep your feet warm. A bright and bold large rug really can alter the feel of your living room and when it is matched with a couple of other living room accessories like a candle or lampshade can deliver the look you are going for.

Alternatively, if you have a fairly bright sofa you may want to opt for a large rug with texture and patterns. A green velvet sofa for example works really well with a black and white striped rug.

Why choose a large rug for a living room?

Large rugs are the perfect way to bring colour and warmth into your living room. Whether you opt for a pink rug to make your tiled floor pop or you’re feeling the cold and trying to create a more cosy vibe. A large living room rug can solve all of your problems.

How large do I need my living room rug to be?

Every living room is different. If you have a fairly small living room, don’t be scared to buy a rug that is too large for your open floor space (the area of your floor that isn’t taken up by sofas and furniture, minus coffee tables). Sliding the rug underneath your sofas can create a unified space that makes the rug feel like a fitted carpet.

On the other hand, if you have a large living room and would like the rug to lay on its own then we would recommend measuring the total area of your open floor space and take away 40cm from each side so the rug doesn’t sit flush to the walls and your sofa.

My Large rug keeps slipping.

Depending on the material and the type of floor that the large rug is laying on, sometimes the rug may slip. We recommend purchasing an underlay for the rug that acts as a grip. These come in many different materials. We found that rubber works quite well as it grips most rugs and can be bought fairly thin. large rug grippers come in various sizes and are available to purchase online.

What are the sizes of large rugs?

Rugs do come in all sizes. Woven Rosa rugs are all handmade on back-strapped looms, they are unique pieces so the lengths and widths are all different. They range from 75cm - 190cm in Width to 150cm - 250cm in length.

There are many various large rug dimensions and it all depends on how large your living space is. There are however some fairly common dimensions that rug makers,

(particularly machine-made) stick to for example there are many 200 x 300 large rugs and 300 x 400 large rugs. This isn’t always the case as different manufacturers and rug brands use slightly different ratios and measurements but generally, you will come across these measurements more frequently.

Can you clean a large living room rug?

Rugs can easily be cleaned. Depending on the material there will be different guidance. If you have a stain on a wool rug it can be cleaned by first hoovering the rug to rid of dust and then using cold water or an organic carpet cleaner scrub the stain.

Can you dye a large rug?

We recommend that you don’t dye your rug. Many of the rugs that we showcase have areas of fading. This adds to the character of the rug as many of the dyes used in traditional rug-making are locally sourced natural dyes. Although they initially have bright and bold colours similar to the synthetic dyes we are used to now they sometimes fade easier, creating a wonderful vintage look.

Where to buy large rug.

You can buy large rugs from many home decor stores, both online and physical shops. There are many high street brands that sell carpets and rugs if you are looking for cheap rugs. However, look out for independent brands or luxury rug specialists that showcase unique handmade homeware that not only looks incredible but will either have a stylish design, be of high quality material or hold a story of culture and if you’re really lucky all three.

Can you use a large rug instead of carpet?

If you are undecided whether to get a carpet fitted or instead purchase a large rug then, first of all, decide on whether the floor is good enough to keep exposed as the rug will not stretch all the way to the wall. The exposed floor between the rug and the wall adds depth to a living room, so if you have a stylish floor then maybe a rug is for you. You also need to measure your floor plan and take a look at the examples above as to how the rug will fit.

If your room is fairly large you will have to buy an extra large rug that is sometimes hard to find with the right dimensions. Opting for a large rug instead of carpet has numerous benefits; you can easily clean a rug whereas carpets can be tough, rugs come in many more colours and patterns than carpets and rugs last much longer and can be used in various rooms in various houses.
